Discovering Your Soul’s Job Description (With Perks!)

Updated: Oct 7, 2025

To My Favorite Humans in This Dimension (and Possibly Others),

Ever catch yourself wondering, “What on earth is my soul’s purpose?” I know I have. (Spoiler alert: it’s usually more exciting than just doing laundry and paying bills.)

Over the next few months, I’ll be sharing insights into the 11 categories our soul purposes, gifts, and talents tend to fall into. The fun twist? Because this dimension is built on free will, it’s up to us—and only us—how we choose to express those gifts. That’s where the magic (and freedom) really kicks in.

At the broadest level, our purpose here can be summed up like this:

  • To forget, and then re-member, the truth of who we really are.

  • To grow and expand in love and compassion for ourselves and others.

(Thanks to Neale Donald Walsch for putting it so beautifully.)

As we lean into specifics, our unique gifts start to shine through—Healer, Teacher, Artist, Nurturer, Visionary, Peacemaker, and more. To kick things off, I’ve chosen Healer as our first “soul purpose” to explore.

So, tell me—do you see yourself in this role? Does the word Healer spark something inside you, or make you want to run for the herbal tea? Either way, I’d love to hear what resonates.

Signs You Are a Healer

Healers are often sensitive to their own suffering as well as the suffering of others. You may already know on some level that you have a spiritual calling to ease the suffering of sentient beings. Friends, family, and even strangers may say they feel better by being around you or that you have a healing touch or a soothing voice. Your hands may heat up at times. You are a good listener, have a big heart, and love being in nature. You may even feel called to gather with like-minded souls.

You could be a wounded healer and may not connect with your calling to assist others until you are well on your way to your own healing. Wounded healers also have so much to offer others. They are unusually empathetic, possess a great deal of knowledge, and can offer others incredible hope and new perspectives—two essential features of the healing process.

Healers and wounded healers alike don't necessarily work in the helping professions. They can be mothers, fathers, aunts, uncles, teachers, artists, or in many other vocations. They tend to make others feel better, especially when those they care about experience challenging times. Because they've dealt with their own challenges (and often continue to), they more easily understand hardship and can help others see the light in the night.

Soul-level healers often visit the Great Healing Temples during their sleep. If you tend to wake up tired, try setting an intention before bed that you are willing to grow and expand according to your soul's plan, but you must wake up in the morning rested and refreshed.

Next Steps

  • Begin to write down all the ways you are working toward your own healing. Resist the urge to skip this simple step. Recording your own healing process will keep you balanced as you begin to look at current and/or new ways to help oth-ers.

  • As you begin to think about your healing gift, look at what excites you or brings you the most joy. Many healers already know precisely how they want to step into their gifts. Others don’t have a clue and may even be skeptical to discover that they are healers. (This was my experience.) Give yourself permission to explore your healing gifts without judgement. Trust that Creator Source will lead you to the path(s) you are meant to walk.

Embrace the gift of free will. You get to choose how and when to express this sacred calling. It's entirely up to you. It can be as simple as starting a book club and really listening to your fellow readers or as complex as getting a degree in a healing modality such as acupuncture. Some people start by taking an energy healing course such as Reiki (healing with light) or Ama Deus (healing with love), both of which are healing touch modalities for self and/or others.

Regardless of your age, when you step into your gift as a healer, it can feel as if you’ve been doing it your whole life. This is because it is who you are on a soul level! Congratulate yourself. Do not doubt this part of yourself.

If something in you is nudging you to explore Ama Deus, which teaches one to channel Universal love through your hands and breath, explore my upcoming Level 1 class at the Cottage on October 4th. (link: https://www.loisannesmith.com/amadeus-class)

Watch for next month's blog where I'll discuss another Soul Purpose: Peacemaker/Diplomat and the important difference between Peacemaker and Peacekeeper.

With light, laughter, and curiosity,
